Positive comments can make a big difference.
We all like to feel appreciated, but sometimes forget that others do too…
A friend recently told me about a book she’d read called “How full is your Bucket?” by Rath and Clifton. It’s based on the “Bucket and Dipper” theory which goes like this; –
“In a manner of speaking, we all have invisible buckets and dippers: – Every day we have dozens of interactions with other people. When we treat them positively, we are putting a drop into their bucket – and also our own bucket – because when we’re helpful or nice to others, it makes us feel good as well. It’s a ‘win- win’. Negative interactions do the opposite and subtract from our buckets”
The friend went on to say; “I taught this to my 9-year-old, and he regularly comes home and tells me how he put a drop in someone’s bucket today. I firmly believe it’s ‘the’ most effective way to teach school aged children empathy. Needless to say, my life has improved greatly since my family members and I have made the bucket and dipper theory part of our lives”
That sounds good and the great news is that it’s based on a theory that’s been proven in many studies in recent years. Called the “Pygmalion effect,” – also sometimes known as the “Rosenthal effect” for the psychologist credited with discovering it, – it teaches that people will act or behave in the way that others expect them to – very similar to the concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The effect can have positive or negative outcomes. A person expected by his or her family, teachers, friends or co-workers to succeed, will, but the opposite is also usually true.
My wife is a hypno-therapist and although I used to joke that she turned people into chickens for a living, I know that hypnotism works. It’s about helping us mange our ‘internal dialogue’ – the way we speak to ourselves. We all have ‘that voice’ in our head letting us know how well we’re going. Or not. That internal voice is incredibly important in helping us navigate daily life, but it can be a big drag too. When we learn to get our voice to be constructive, positive and affirmative, its life changing.
Positive comments lead to positive feelings, which boost our immune systems, improve our energy, our appetites and help us sleep, not to mention encourage us to spread the good cheer.
They cost nothing, feel good and have great outcomes, so get filling those buckets.
Enjoy the rest of your week
