Dedicate

DEDICATE.

Do you ever get frustrated when you hear someone groan ‘I’m bored?’ Yeah, me too.

I immediately think of 2 potential answers: – ‘Find something useful to do’ and ‘Being bored can be a great thing because it’s an opportunity to develop your imagination, and that can lead to pursuing all sorts of interests, skills, causes…’

Which can lead to great things.

Dedicating time and effort to a cause or passtime can be fun and fulfilling as well as impactful—both personally and for the world around you. Whether it’s a hobby, sport, education, family, volunteering, supporting a movement, or simply contributing kindness to those who need it, investing in meaningful effort brings a sense of purpose and connection as well as building skills and personality.

Dedication doesn’t have to take much time – it can just be a little thing…

On one hand I’m inspired by the message given by Professor Michelle Simmons who won the Prime Ministers Prize for science in 2023, who says “Quantum physics is hard. Technology at the forefront of human endeavour is hard. But that’s what makes it worth it. I believe that the things that are most worth doing in life are almost always hard to do- but when you succeed the euphoria is immense”

On the other hand, I’m also inspired by a friend I taught at high school almost 40 years ago. He’s a dedicated dad and a busy businessman who dedicates a couple of hours every Sunday morning to host a bunch of also busy mates for breakfast – at a different coffee shop each week. It’s just a little thing but means a lot in social connection and support. I remember one time when one of the participants was going through a crisis and it helped him get back on track…

When we dedicate ourselves to doing something hard, we may have to sacrifice other things – luxuries, time off, hobbies – but the rewards can be immense. But it doesn’t have to be difficult or demanding to make a positive difference. And here’s another one of the exciting things that happen when we dedicate time and effort to something we believe in – it’s gets easier. When we regularly do something, our abilities grow.

Remember the story about the little engine who ‘thought she could’

Yes, it sometimes takes discipline and effort, but what is at first difficult gets easier with dedication and what at first seems boring can become rewarding – and change lives.

Think of how you feel when it’s done.
