Have you heard the old – supposedly Chinese curse; ‘May you live in interesting times?’ Meaning may you be doomed to go through dangerous, crazy, scary, potentially deadly disruption and upheaval…like the situation we’re facing right now!
There’s no doubt the times we’re living in are ‘interesting’ any way you’d interpret the word. It’s an unusual person who isn’t aware of what’s going on around us – in America, the Middle East, China, Ukraine and on and on…
It’ appalling, scary, horrific, Or perhaps interesting and even exciting, depending on your world view. And it’s affecting most of our lives; increased uncertainty, anxiety, fear…
But let’s take a breath and remember the world has been through dangerous, testing, crazy, scary periods many times before. It’s a lucky generation that hasn’t experienced war, disaster, plague, famine, fire flood, earthquake – not to mention the more ‘up close and personal’ varieties of horror, grief or despair that life can dish out.
Yes it’s almost unavoidable to feel that today’s world is much more dangerous than in the past for so many reasons; – from the immediacy and ‘everywhere we look’ nature of the media – which, let’s remember needs our attention to make a living – right through to our negativity bias.
If you’re not aware of that, Google it – it’s interesting.
But the reality is that we’ve never lived in better times; – most of us live longer healthier lifespans that at any time in the past, with – for most of us – better education, greater opportunities, less crime, much more luxury and fun, the list goes on.
Again, if you don’t believe it Google it. Ask a Chat Bot. Look around. Read some history.
So let’s keep in mind that we are SO lucky in so many ways, and no matter what comes next, we have much to be thankful for.
And it could be worse.
Our best way forward – as it always is – is to live our best lives, be kind to everyone we meet, tell our family and friends we love, care for, are proud of them. Cherish the things we have, here and now.
